Throwback to Electrify Expo 2024 Where Innovation Meets Style in the EV World

Electrify Expo Showcases Stunning EV Conversions and Modified EVs, Plus Cutting-Edge Tech

Photos by Jose Valdez

Right in the heart of all the action in Long Beach, California, the first-ever Electrify Showoff stole the show on May 19-21 amidst the hustle and bustle of OEM EV manufacturers, aftermarket EVs specialists, and retrofit specialists’ exhibits. This incredible custom car show featured an impressive lineup of about 110 EVs. But it was not trade and business. Local EV enthusiasts brought out the big guns with a wide variety of modified Teslas, converted classics, e-bikes and trikes, and even purpose-built electric cars designed specifically for motorsports.

Some seriously influential figures stole the spotlight at Electrify Expo. One of them was none other than Ryan Basseri of Rywire Motorsport Electronics. He brought the heat with two of his electric conversions, including his jaw-dropping S2000, a project that made waves at SEMA in 2022. This beauty caught everyone’s attention with its discreetly modified exterior and intriguing deleted exhaust openings.

Ryan had another trick up his sleeve—a red 6th-generation Honda Civic hatchback that left visitors in awe. Why? This bad boy incorporated Tesla motors, delivering power to all four wheels through AEM EV control solutions.

The retrofit and modified EVs have become a full-on subculture.

Another vehicle that caught everyone’s eye was a Tesla Model 3 that was masterfully built by Evasive Motorsports and driven by the skilled Dai Yoshihara. During the 2021 Pikes Peak hill climb, they faced some electrical troubles, but guess what? They bounced back like champions in 2022! Not only did they secure the fastest time among all the EV competitors, but they also snagged a super impressive ninth-place finish overall. It was an absolute triumph for the team!

The superb selection of retrofitted classic cars got everyone excited at the show. Conductive Classics totally rocked it with its 1964 Galaxie, while Current LA blew minds with its reimagined 1932 EV Deuce. The rebuilt 1957 Chevrolet Bel Air EV by Current also stole the spotlight, showcasing this perfect fusion of vintage looks and cutting-edge electric power and winning the “Best of Show” award.

Block Tribute Racer

The Sierra Echo EV was showcased at the Hypercraft booth, representing the collaboration between Sierra Cars and Hypercraft. And guess what? During Industry Day, Sierra Cars founder and professional race car driver Cole Powelson and Hypercraft co-founder and chief marketing officer Jonathon Miller announced that Lucy Block, who’s not only a rally driver but also the wife of the legendary late Ken Block, will be taking part in the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb to honor her husband’s legacy and raise awareness for the 43 Institute.

Classic 911 Galore

People were going crazy for Porsches with electric powertrains at the show! It was all the rage, and companies like ReVolt Systems and Ampere EV were right in the mix, offering conversion kits that make the whole process a breeze (and relatively affordable, too). The Toyo booth had this mind-blowing electric 935, all thanks to the genius Bisi Ezerioha. This bad boy was equipped with a beastly three-phase motor pumping out over 440kW/600h, and they cleverly hid the battery packs, too. Bisi’s previous Porsche EV project, a 1984 935, had already made waves in 2020. That guy knows how to turn heads!

Ruined Teslas

There were so many other modified electric rides at the Electrify Showoff that made a profound statement. AutoFashion brought its A-game with a widebody Model 3 that was straight up drool-worthy. The Tesla was just one of many modified Teslas from Team Ruined, which took home Best Crew of Showoff. Another stunner included the Tjin Edition Mach-E on full air suspension, looking all sleek and stylish. Tjin also had an F-150 Lightning built for overlanding, ready to take on any adventure you throw at it.

Electrify Showoff was a mind-blowing sneak peek into the future of electric car customization and mods. It was insane: You could feel the energy and excitement in the air. The growth potential for our scene is staggering, and it has become a full-on subculture, with more exciting stuff coming our way in the years to come. Short term, the Electrify Expo is heading for a full US tour, with six other dates throughout the summer and fall, including San Francisco; Washington, DC; Long Island, New York; Seattle; Miami; and Austin, TX. Check out electrifyexpo.com for more info and bookings, and we’ll see you there!

On Sunday, networking time allowed us to see firsthand the converted classic EVs on display, take photos, and question the builders during the catered lunch break and afternoon happy hour. The day concluded with an informative “Ask the Experts” Q&A session, whereby all conference speakers were brought together for audience queries.

Casey Loter of Salt Lake City was the lucky winner of the CD-7LG Carbon Digital dash display, donated by AEM-EV. The Golden Wrench, i.e., the Promoter’s Pick for Best of Show, was awarded to Kevin Erickson for his ‘73 “Electrollite” by Terry Breheny of Ohm On The Range. Finally, the longest-distance-driven-in-a-converted-EV award went to Mick Longley from Durango, Colorado, who came at the wheel of his Nissan Leaf-swapped ‘71 Volkswagen hatchback 729 miles (roundtrip).

There’s more!

Terry, show organizer, concluded the weekend by stating that based on the overwhelmingly positive feedback from both days, the event will return next year with even more activities and vehicles. Watch this space for the 2023 dates, or check SOC23.com.

This 1930 Ford Five Window Coupe is a Rolling Work of Art

1930 Ford Five-Window Coupe

JORDAN QUINTAL HAS BEEN BUILDING HOT RODS, STREET RODS, CUSTOMS AND LEAD SLEDS EVER SINCE HE WAS A LITTLE KID WORKING ON PLASTIC SCALE MODELS. WHEN HE WAS 13, HE GRADUATED FROM MODELS TO WORKING ON FULL-SCALE CARS AT HIS UNCLE WALLY’S BODY AND PAINT SHOP. THERE HE LEARNED HOW TO WORK WITH METAL, USING HAMMERS, DOLLIES AND SPOONS, BEFORE MOVING ON TO EXPERIENCING BODY FILLER AND SANDING TECHNIQUES. AFTER CONQUERING THE BODY PREP WORK, HIS UNCLE HANDED HIM A SPRAY GUN AND HE STARTED APPLYING PRIMER, BASECOAT AND CLEAR. BY THE TIME HE GRADUATED HIGH SCHOOL HE WAS AN ACCOMPLISHED PAINTER.

Grasshopper’s foundation was constructed from a pair of boxed 4-inch tapered frame rails and cross members. The front suspension is a Super Bell dropped I-beam and a drilled axle supported by a custom transverse leaf spring developed by North County Spring. Spindles with friction-style shocks from Speedway dampen the leaf spring. The front suspension is anchored by a pair of Speedway Motors chrome hairpins with custom Super Rides tapered hairpin ends. Wilwood Brake rotors and dual piston calipers with a pair of Buick cast aluminum finned backing plates complete the custom front brake package. A pair of Astro Supreme 15 x 5 chrome wheels is wrapped in Coker Classic 165-15 tires.

Jordan opened his body shop in 1975 when he was 24. In 2000, he decided to build complete custom cars and trucks for customers and opened Super Rides by Jordan in Escondido, California. Throughout the years, he’s become well-known in the industry as a master custom builder. Many of his masterpieces have received prestigious awards in the custom automotive world.

The grunt comes from a ’67 Pontiac GTO 400 ci machined and assembled by Gregg Scott Racing in El Cajon, CA, with all of the right stuff. It produces 560 hp at 5,000 rpm and a whole lot of neck-snapping torque. A set of Auto Tech/Race Tech aluminum pistons and SCAT connecting rods were bolted to the SCAT steel crankshaft. An Isky camshaft provides the rumpity-rump with racing valvetrain and Edelbrock Performance aluminum heads. A trick Ames aluminum tripower intake manifold was set up with three custom aluminum carb spacers and three Rochester tri-power carburetors totaling 1,350 cfm. Jordan designed, bent and welded a pair of custom headers. A TKO five-speed manual transmission was beefed up with a double disc clutch to handle Jordan’s quick power shifts. The shifts are grabbed by a wild custom shifter that Jordan designed and fabricated himself. An aluminum driveshaft from Oceanside Driveline connects the power to the Dutchman third member.

The reason Jordan wanted to build his ’30 Ford coupe was to showcase his talents as a craftsman and drive a badass hot rod! Jordan started his unique ’30 Ford five-window body mods with a 4-inch chop. The ’32 Ford grille shell and Dan Fink custom grille were also shortened 6 inches. A pair of larger ’34 commercial truck headlights flanks the grille. Jordan made a cool custom radiator overflow tank. The doors and jambs were reworked so that the doors fit flush with the body. Stock door handles allow for external access, while a pair of swan-neck side mirrors allow for peripheral rearview vision. A pair of classic ’40s 682-C headlight turn indicators were used as rear taillights.

Opening the door exposes the fully custom interior. Please direct your eyes to the custom ’50 Ford dash that features a stock speedometer gauge cluster and clock. A custom Super Rides steering column was capped with a Budnik Flat Track Turn 4 fourspoke steering wheel that Jordan modified by adding a custom quick-disconnect hub for easier access. The rearview mirror is from Jordan’s close friend the late Boyd Coddington’s custom ’57 Chevy, Cheszoom. Armondo’s Custom Upholstery in San Jacinto, CA, was responsible for the black leather and stitch work. Audio vibes come from an Alpine head unit powered by a 300- watt amplifier that blasts out of a pair of front 6 ½-inch diameter speakers and rear 6 x 9-inch speakers.

Remember that Jordan started out working at his uncle’s body shop when he was 13 years old, and he went on to become a master painter by the time he was 18. After a 30-year hiatus, he laid down the awesome color you see here. He started with painting everything base white, and then mixed a batch of House of Kolor Lime Time Green, added a little House of Kolor Pagan Gold Kandy concentrate with a pinch of Egyptian Gold pearl, and covered the white. Next he covered it with multiple coats of clear and had Pete “Hot Dog” Finlan lay down pinstriping and lettering. Finally, Jordan buried everything with six coats of clear. A grand total of 18 coats of color and clear consume this ’30 Ford five-window coupe.

A Super Rides custom-fabricated steel fuel tank fits neatly into the trunk and is secured by a chromed dimple-die X-mount bracket.

Go Cordless with Summit Racing 20V Cordless Power Tools

It’s hard to beat cordless power tools. They’re easy to use, portable, and eliminate the extension cords you used to trip over in the shop.

If you need more nudging to upgrade to cordless power tools, take a look at Summit Racing 20V Cordless Tools. Don’t let the affordable price throw you. These are high-quality tools with features like powerful brushless motors that can run much longer on a charge than a brushed motor, integrated LED work lights, and ergonomically designed grips for comfortable operation.

Summit Racing 20V Cordless Tools use the same 2.0 aH and 4.0 aH lithium-ion batteries and chargers. That eliminates the frustration of having a bunch of batteries that aren’t compatible with all of your cordless tools. Both batteries provide plenty of power, but the 4.0 aH battery’s higher capacity means it can provide almost twice the run time of the 2.0 aH battery.

Summit Racing 20V Cordless Tools are available by themselves, with a 2.0 aH or 4.0 aH battery, or with a battery and charger. Batteries and the charger are also available separately so you can add more as your tool collection grows.

Take a look at Summit Racing 20V Cordless Tools and see which ones will work best for you. Once you use one and see how good it is, we’re betting you’ll get the whole family for your shop.

Protect Your Truck’s Bed from Damage with a Dee Zee X-Mat Truck Bed Mats

You toss a lot of things in your truck’s bed, so why not toss in something that protects it from damage? A DeeZee X-Mat Truck Bed Mat will keep your truck bed free from scratches, dings, and dents caused by loading and unloading cargo or when loads shift during transport.

X-Mats are made from 3/8-inch-thick, high-density fiber infused rubber that resists abrasion and tears. The tightly compressed rubber fibers withstand gasoline, oil, and most chemicals, making them perfect when transporting motorcycles, ATVs, mowers, and other motorized equipment. X-Mats also deflect harmful UV rays and will not crack, cut, or tear even in the most extreme temperatures. Rubber cleats on the underside of the X-Mats keep them securely in place even when you’re not hauling cargo, and they facilitate water passage to the OE bed drains to prevent rusting.

Dee Zee X-Mat Truck Bed Mats are available for many 2002-23 Chevy/GMC, Dodge/Ram, Ford, and Jeep pickups.
